Within the framework of the Regional Program for Development and Protection Phase II, financed by the Emergency Trust Fund for Africa of the European Union, IOM signed a new service agreement with Schaduf Agriculture and Trade to implement a grant entitled “Enhancing Food Security and Income Generation for Migrants and Egyptian Host Communities through Agriculture” water surfaces.
The project will kick off this month by installing productive hydroponic farms on the rooftops of residential buildings for 20 selected families – divided into 10 immigrant families and 10 Egyptian families – in three areas in Cairo. Farms equipped with hydroponic systems will allow the growth of high-value crops all year round, favored by selected beneficiaries who will learn how to operate hydroponic systems through extensive training. The training will be conducted by Schadoff specialists with the aim of enabling the beneficiaries to grow independently.
Increased trade linkages and value chain integration by connecting beneficiaries with interested buyers where their products will be collected, packaged and sold online and in supermarkets.
This project supports the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal 8: Promote sustainable and inclusive economic growth, productive employment and decent work for all, and Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. Goal 13: Take urgent action to address climate change and its impacts. It is also in line with Egypt’s Vision 2030 to reach a society characterized by equal economic and social rights and opportunities to achieve social inclusion.
