The story of Schaduf started with a vision of wanting to create a company with an impact, a social and environmental impact.
Following a brief two-week volunteering trip at an aquaponic farm the two brothers Sherif and Tarek Hosny got fixated on the impact they could have on a highly populated city,
like their hometown, Cairo. They wanted to change and adapt the technology to be suited for rooftop farming. That was the start of urban farming in Cairo, Egypt and the Middle East.
Soon after that, Schaduf hired its first employees and started to tackle new problems in their environment. The concrete walls surrounding city dwellers were the next challenge. From rooftop farms we moved to the Living Green Walls. Adding green spaces in locations that previously were void of any greenery and were thought to be “ungreenable”.
Schaduf introduced Green Walls to the Egyptian market and soon moved to regional markets in the neighboring Arabian Gulf Countries and cities such as in Dubai, UAE, Oman, and Saudi Arabia.
However, to have the biggest impact, it was clear that Schaduf had to start from the beginning of any transformational process. And the start is always design.
Schaduf partnered with Khaled Abdel Gawad to start a landscape architectural division with a focus on sustainable landscape designs. Today, our team of landscape architects is designing and supervising some of the largest projects in Egypt and the Middle East. The quality of our designs lies in the fact that we combine the local character and social features with sustainability and rational use of resources.
The story of Schaduf continues in the Netherlands by partnering with Foodstars, an incubator founded by the Dutch ministry of agriculture. As we hope that our influence will extend beyond the Middle East, and we can communicate our vision everywhere.
With further growth ambitions and plans for bigger expansions and innovative product developments, Schaduf partnered with Mishkat in KSA. Mishkat is a leading VC in the region focused on cutting edge farming technologies. By combining our experience, with the investment of Mishkat, we hope to have the most prominent role in making Saudi Arabia green and sustainable.
Today, Schaduf has more than 50 employees and has created more than 9600 square meters of green walls, designed 4,100,000 m2 of landscape and Master planning in Egypt, KSA and the UK, and installed more than 400+ rooftop farms.
With a vision to grow further and bring about more change, Schaduf has partnered with the Water and Energy for Food fund to develop their Urban Farming kits to be able to cater to an ever-growing demand of fresh and local produce in cities.
